For the first time in its 1,100 year history, the Royal Mint is releasing a series of 50p coins designed by members of the British public -- a range of 29 coins proudly boasting the 29 Olympic and Paralympic sports for London 2012 (Wednesday 13th October).
The competition to be a part of history by designing the coins for the Royal Mint was hotly contested, with more than 30,000 designs submitted by the general public earlier this year. After months of careful deliberation by a panel of independent experts and representatives from Royal Mint, London 2012 and the International Olympic Committee, 29 different designs were chosen.
