THAAD deployment site confirmed
After much difficulty, an agreement confirming the site of deployment for the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system was finalized. On February 28, Lotte Group approved a land-swap agreement with Seoul's defense ministry to provide its golf course in Seongju-gun County, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province as the site for deployment. Back in June 2014, talk of deploying THAAD first surfaced when Curtis Scaparrotti, commander of U.S. Forces Korea at the time, recommended the placement. On January 6, 2016, North Korea conducted its fourth nuclear test, prompting Seoul to officially start reviewing the THAAD option. Although now with the site confirmed, the first elements of the anti-missile system have begun to arrive, discord surrounding THAAD is likely to remain for the time being.

THAAD retaliation from China
South Korea has maintained that the deployment of THAAD is solely for defense purposes, but the decision has angered China, which has long expressed its opposition to its placement in Korea. With the deployment now in motion, Korea has been experiencing a string of ‘unofficial’ economic sanctions from China. Major retailers have launched a boycott of products from Lotte, which provided the site for deployment. Also, an order to ban sales of Korean tour packages has been issued to Chinese tour agencies. Is there a breakthrough in this deadlock between Seoul and Beijing? We sit down to talk about the ongoing conflict surrounding THAAD and what possible solutions there may be.

북한을 견제하기 위해 배치될 예정인 사드. 그러나 북한 이상으로 사드 배치에 민감하게 반응하는 건 중국이다. 한반도 내 사드 배치를 줄곧 반대해온 중국 정부는, 사드 배치 부지가 확정되던 날, 반발을 넘어 경고 수준의 발언을 쏟아냈다. 정부의 이런 발언과 맞물려 중국에선 반한(反韓) 감정이 확산되고 있다. 사드 배치 부지를 제공한 롯데 제품들이 중국 온오프라인 쇼핑몰에서 퇴출당하고, 한국 브랜드의 자동차가 거리에서 이유 없이 파손되고, 일부 초중고교에선 한국 제품 불매를 지도하는 등 '사드 배치에 대한 보복'이 계속되고 있는데...
